About the GRE

The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is a standardized test developed and administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS). It’s an admission requirement for many graduate schools, especially in the United States and Canada. The GRE, offered as a computer-based exam, measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing.

GRE format and timing

The GRE exam consists of six sections: an analytical writing section, two verbal reasoning sections, two quantitative reasoning sections, and an unscored or research section. The overall testing time is about 3 hours and 45 minutes. The unscored and research section do not count toward your GRE score; they’re used by ETS to try out new questions.

GRE Scores

The analytical writing section is scored by one human, and by e-rater, a natural-language processing program developed by ETS. If the human and algorithm are in clear disagreement, the e-rater score is discarded, and the essays are reviewed by a second human scorer.

The verbal and quantitative reasoning sections are scored only by a computer. The verbal and quantitative reasoning parts of the GRE are “adaptive”, meaning that your success in the first section will impact the difficulty of the second section. This allows more granular results. Ultimately, scores are scaled to compensate for these difficulty differences.

SectionScore ScaleHow the Section is Scored
Analytical Writing0–6 (0.5-point increments)By human and machine.
Verbal Reasoning130–170 (1-point increments)By machine, adaptive.
Quantitative Reasoning130–170 (1-point increments)By machine, adaptive.

Hence, the final GRE score is often condensed into two figures:

  • A quantitative score: up to 340.
  • A verbal score: up to 6.
